In today’s world, a man faces multiple commitments to his spouse, children, workplace, community and Church. Every day these responsibilities seem to grow while the time to meet them seemingly dwindles. It can be daunting for today’s man to find time to volunteer.

Imagine if you were able to tell a man that if he could give just 24 hours a year to the Knights of Columbus he could make a positive difference in his community and Church. Below is an illustration of just how little time it takes to be an active member of the Order. Even with this minimal commitment he can be an important part of his council and reap the benefits membership offers to him and his family. When talking to a prospect about joining our Order, try breaking down the time commitment in this way:

Six hours a year on a council sponsored Church, community, council, family, pro-life or youth project of his choosing.

Four hours a year attending two council meetings (if well-run and interesting, he might even come back for a third).

Four hours a year enjoying (with his entire family) a council social function such as a dinner, dance, picnic, etc.

Four hours a year volunteering at the council’s annual drive for people with intellectual disabilities, the Knights of Columbus New International Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest, K of C Soccer Challenge, Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest or similar event.

Four hours a year attending, with his family, two corporate Communions or council prayer services at his parish.

One hour a year reading the council bulletin, council Web site and the Supreme Council Web site.

One hour a year visiting with a Knights of Columbus Field Agent to ensure that his family is protected now and in the years to come.

That’s only 24 hours a year, which practically any man can fit into his schedule. When you present the time commitment of joining the Order in this way, it doesn’t seem very intimidating at all.

Once a man becomes a member and sees how rewarding being a Knight is, he’ll want to dedicate more of his time to the Order.

There are 8,760 hours in a year. By giving the Knights of Columbus 24 of those hours a man can be a better Catholic, father, husband and person. Think of the difference the Knights of Columbus can make in our communities if these men join us. We only have to let each qualified prospect know that he already has the time — only 24 hours — to join and make a difference in his Church and community.

Council 9096 of Apple Valley is starting the process to become a sponsor for a Squires circle, the official Knights of Columbus youth organization. The Squires is designed to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ.

A Squires circle must be sponsored by a council or assembly, but is run by and for young men, under the guidance of several Knights (KC fathers are encouraged), who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities.

Look for news and more info later this year. If you know of young men willing to be a squire, contact Bob Brozel @ 952-997-2363

The Knights of Columbus passed a significant milestone on April 30, 2010, when its membership exceeded 1.8 million.

At the end of the last day of April, the official tally of Knights of Columbus around the world stood at 1,800,445.

“Achieving this milestone in membership is a testament to the high regard in which the Knights of Columbus is held among Catholic men everywhere,” Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. “We offer a unique opportunity to serve our church and our communities as one of the most active service organizations anywhere in the world.
“We truly offer the ‘experience of a life- time,’ to join brother Knights in a com- mon effort to become better fathers, bet- ter husbands, better citizens and better Catholics, together with the opportunity to provide financial protection for their families.”
Membership in the Knights of Columbus grew from 1.7 million to 1.8 million in less than five years (59 months), and continues a growth trend in which the number of Knights has grown every year since 1973. Moreover, membership has grown in all but four years since 1942.
In the United States, jurisdictions adding the largest number of new members were Texas, California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois, which together accounted for 15,506 new members recruited since the beginning of the current fraternal year on July 1, 2009. Those five states accounted for more than one-third of the 45,180 new U.S. members.
In Canada, jurisdictions in Quebec and Ontario together recruited 4,640 new members, more than 70 percent of the 6,469 new Canadian members.
In the Philippines, Luzon led all jurisdictions with 7,669 new members recruited, fully one-half of all new members recruited there.
In Mexico, the Mexico South jurisdiction recruited 515 new members, more than one-third of all new members recruited there.
The Order’s newest jurisdiction, Poland, also grew briskly, recruiting 291 new members and increasing its membership by more than one-third in less than a year. The Dominican Republic added 221 new members, representing growth of 12 percent in less than a year.
Over the past 10 months, the Knights of Columbus has recruited 70,310 new members worldwide, and councils have two more months to recruit new members before the end of the fraternal year on June 30. A final tally of Knights of Collumbus membership for the 2009-2010 fraternal year will be announced in July. The number of new members recruited will be offset by deaths and withdrawals, and thus net growth in membership will be slightly lower.
—————
Lets keep up all the good work, and if you know of a fellow catholic who is interested in giving time and talent, living out a catholic life, while helping those in the church and his community, then let the council know.	Please contact me or the Grand Knight for the council. Thanks.

During the May 15 and 16 weekend, the Knights worked the Apple Valley Von Han- son Hot Dog and Brat Stand and earned $1266. This is $300 over the annual average that we have earned over the past eleven years. We have worked the Stand for 11 years and we have earned over $10,600 so THANK YOU to all the Knights who have worked or came to eat some Brats and Hot Dogs over the years.

It was a great weekend to be working at the stand; Saturday and Sunday were sunny, the Brats and Hot Dogs were delicious, and the camaraderie was friendly. The funds will be applied towards the Risen Savior Knights of Columbus High School Scholarships.

A Big Thank You to all the Knights who worked a weekend shift at the Stand: Jim Amireault, Hector Baldus, Joe Barket, Dave Benz, Bob Brotzel, Bill Conrad, Steve Dahl, Tom Donahoe, Gene Ebner, Jim Green, Bill Horton, Andy Howard, Gene Hoy, Joe Jaszczak, Farmer Jones, Joe Lexa, Derrick Lindstrom, Don Miller, Gerry Morrow, Francis Oberembt, George Olsen, Marty Peter, Tom Schreader, and Bill Tschohl.

A Special Thank You to B. J. Bertram who organized the event and was the Day Supervisor. The BIGGEST THANK YOU goes to Jim Green who scheduled all the Knights who worked at the stand.
